When we first opened Gaetano’s we considered making Spumoni ourselves. However, ice cream is no easy task. It’s labor intensive and takes specific equipment to produce. That’s why we traveled far and wide to find the absolute best Spumoni. We didn’t have to travel far and found it in Orange County, made by Brother’s Desserts.
For 25 years we proudly served Brothers Spumoni. It wasn’t uncommon for a guest to say, “That was the best spumoni I’ve ever had.” They really do have amazing spumoni. Highlights of rum, chocolate, hazelnut, strawberry and pistachio ice creams, with chunks of maraschino cherries, roasted pistachios and chocolate chips. This ice cream is a “grown ups” dream!
Then the pandemic hit. Brother’s decided to stop producing Spumoni. “Yikes” I thought. We started using another Spumoni. It was good but not great like Brother’s. I knew our guests wouldn’t be fans of it. Nonetheless, we felt we had to have a Spumoni on the menu. We received many complaints about the quality of it not being the same. We agreed.
I called Brother’s Desserts once a month. “Hey, just checking in. Are you guys making the Spumoni again?” And each month, I would hear, “No.”
I almost gave up.
Then in January of this year, their response to my question was, “Yes! We’ve started making it again.” Phone in one hand and air pumping my other hand in joy, I responded: “I’ll take 6 cases.” It’s been on our dessert menu ever since.
The hot summer is a perfect time to try our Spumoni again!
