On multiple visits, I have had the pleasure of experiencing each calendar month of the year, in Italy. None of the months are a better time to shake hands with, than October.
Winter months are cold. So cold, that you’ll need a bigger suitcase to bring all your warm clothing. I’ve been snowed on in December and had frozen toes in January.
Spring months are a beautiful time of the year, but it can be rainy. Not to mention, schools start to get out and there is a flood of tourists hitting each city around late May.
Summer months are hot and crowded. Air Conditioning is not a “given” for hotels as it is here. Bring your “neck fan” to keep cool during these hot times.
Aaaah, but mid Fall (October) is “just right”! Let me explain further:
- The temperature is mild. Not too hot, not too cold.
- The tourist season is coming to a close. Of course there will always be tourists. But the majority of them just left upon the close of Summer.
- The changing of the leaves all over the country is spectacular. Green lush fields turn into a bright orange that lights the horizon.
- Foodies rejoice because Harvests are happening! Stay in Tuscany and neighboring Umbria for all your harvest dreams. If you enjoy wine, go to a winery for their harvest. Truffles? It’s truffle hunt season. How about olives? Visit an olive farm to pick from the trees and then create your own olive oil. Search these seasonal trips online for more information.
A good time to start planning for an October 2023 Italy trip is now. Put it on paper and tell yourself it’s happening. The more you wait, the more trips get pushed to the side (I’m guilty of this too) and never happen. Buon Viaggio!
