The beauty behind the Italian pastas is not only the deliciousness of the pasta itself, but that each pasta means something. First off, look at the end of the word as it will let you know if you are getting something small or large:
“Small” Suffixes: -ini, -elli, -illi, -etti, -ine, -elle
“Large” Suffixes: -oni, -oneTake a look at your favorites:
- Linguini: Small tongue
- Fettuccine: Small ribbons
- Spaghetti: Little strings
- Farfalle (aka bowtie): Butterfly
- Tagliatelle: Cuts
- Bucatini: Small hole
- Campanelle: Bell
- Capellini: Thin hair
- Fusilli: Spindle
- Vermicelli: Little worms
- Gemelli: Twins
- Orecchiete: Little ears
- Penne: Quills or feathers
