Gaetano & Frances Giuliano's (fondly known as Nana & Nanu) original Deli was established in 1925 in Wakefield, Massachusetts, serving great Italian food to the neighborhood. In 1947,
Gaetano moved his family to the West Coast. Over the years Gaetano opened several Giuliano's Delicatessans in Southern California.
Gaetano's Restaurant founder, Steve Giuliano (Gaetano's grandson) was born into the food business. From the minute he could walk, you could find Steve running around Giuliano's Deli in Gardena, sneaking meatballs when no one was looking, and slicing Salami behind the deli counter. As time went on, and Giuliano's grew, Steve became Director of Operations at the Giuliano's Commissary.
Dori Gestone was born into an entrepreneurial Italian family filled with love and togetherness. Her mom, Dotty, would cook wonderful Italian meals for the whole family almost every day....much of her recipes you can find on our menu. Our guests at Gaetano's are treated similar to how Dotty treated family and friends who were over for dinner.
In 1976 Steve was working behind the counter at Giuliano's in Torrance, when all of a sudden he was "struck by the lightning bolt". Dori had come to the deli to pick up sandwiches for the celebration of cousin Angela's birth. For Steve, it was love at first sight. For Dori, it took a couple more Italian subs to fall for the large hearted Steve. As fate would have it, two years later they were married.
Steve headed the operations at the Giuliano's Commissary, and Dori assisted with the growing catering business Giuliano's created. Their knowledge for food and service became a powerful partnership.
Soon after, they had two children, Vince and Andreanna. Both enjoyed the privelage of having dough fights at the Giuliano's Commissary, at the expense of Steve's clothes. Vince would bag the groceries at the deli's, and Andreanna would sweep the floors with her mini broom.
Steve and Dori opened Gaetano's Deli on December 19, 1993. The deli featured fresh baked breads, an authentic wood burning pizza oven, sandwiches, pasta, salads and specialty pastries. Customers would order at the deli counter and food was brought out fast and fresh. With the assistance of many cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends, the deli was a hit, yet Steve and Dori wanted something different. In 1994 they changed the deli into an Italian Restaurant using recipes from the kitchens of Grandma Dot, Nanu Tony, and Nana Frances (Parents and Grandparents of Steve and Dori). From that
point on, Gaetano's has prided itself on home cooked food and family friendly service.
In 2004, Gaetano's was moved to the current location where we stand today. Many remember us from our old location on Crenshaw Blvd., in the same shopping center. The make-over of the shopping center meant a make-over for the location of the restaurant.
Although our food is one of a kind, we realize we would not be such a wonderful restaurant if it wasn't for the help of our family, friends, and great employees. We would also like to thank our customers for giving us the opportunity to serve quality foods at reasonable prices. We are privelaged to have such great people sharing their company with us. Thanks for stopping by!
